If you enter a domain name in our WHOIS search engine, it will scour a
huge database of domains and return information about the one you entered. This
information typically contains the name, address, and phone number of the
administrative, billing, and technical contacts of the domain name.
The whois database reflects the legal owner of the domain and if this
doesn't contain your name and address, you are NOT the legal owner. There are
some registrars who will register domain names in their own name to get around
the privacy issue with this but this means they are the legal owner and not you.
These suppliers should be avoided as ownership and/or legal issues can
arise.
Opting out
It is now possible for registrants to opt out of global domain name whois search results. Nominet the .uk registry have provided registrants with this option for many years at no cost, global registrars however charge a fee. This fee is small change though if you wish to keep your privacy just that, private!
Global Domain Names
ID Protect: Because your privacy is important
ID protect works in the same way as having your phone number "unlisted or x-directory": it prevents people from gaining access to your phone number, address, and other private information. There is a charge for ID protect on global domains, £4 per year.
.uk Domain Names
Nominet UK (the registry for all UK domain names) will allow private individuals to opt out and this option is available during our registration process, there is no cost. This only applies when a domain name
is registered for private use only. This results in only your name being shown
rather than your address, phone number and email address.
